EXPERT PICKS FOR HOMES WITH MIXED FLOORING

Our Most Recommended Vacuums for Every Floor in Your Home

Hardwood in one room, area rugs in another, carpet upstairs — most homes aren’t just one type of flooring. These are the vacuums we recommend most often because they’re versatile enough to handle all of it.

Each model on this page can properly clean bare floors, area rugs and carpet, including plush carpet. So if you’re not sure whether your rug technically counts as low pile, medium pile or something in between, you don’t have to overthink it.

Because all five can handle mixed flooring, the best choice comes down to how you like to clean — canister or upright, how much ground you cover, how often you want to change bags, and which convenience features matter most to you.

Our Top Picks

Five vacuums we come back to again and again because they can handle the widest range of flooring. The biggest difference isn’t what they can clean — it’s which design makes the most sense for your home.

TOP-OF-THE-LINE SEBO CANISTER

Sebo Airbelt D4 Premium

Choose this if you want more capacity, longer reach and fewer interruptions while you clean.

The D4 is Sebo’s top-of-the-line canister and a great choice for larger homes, busy households, families, pet owners, or anyone who appreciates more capacity and fewer interruptions while cleaning. It has Sebo’s largest bag, a 40-ft cord and up to a 52-ft cleaning range, so you can cover more space with fewer stops.

Its 320° rotating hose connection gives it excellent maneuverability as you move around furniture and from room to room.

You also get Sebo’s full-size ET-1 electric powerhead with push-button brushroll removal for rugs and carpet, plus a dedicated hard-floor tool.

10-Year Warranty

VERSATILE MID-SIZE CANISTER

Sebo Airbelt E3 Premium

Choose this if you want a versatile mid-size Sebo canister for whole-home cleaning.

The E3 is a versatile mid-size Sebo canister for homes with mixed flooring. It pairs Sebo’s full-size ET-1 electric powerhead with push-button brushroll removal for rugs and carpet with a dedicated hard-floor tool for hardwood, tile and other bare floors.

Its mid-size design gives you a great balance of whole-home versatility, cleaning range and easy maneuverability.

10-Year Warranty

BEST UPRIGHT

Sebo Felix Premium

Choose this if you prefer an upright.

If you prefer the feel of an upright instead of a canister, the Felix is our favorite. It gives you a full-size electric powerhead with brush on/off at the handle, adjustable suction and a separate hard-floor tool.

It’s a great whole-home option when you want one vacuum for bare floors, area rugs and carpet but simply prefer an upright design.

10-Year Warranty

BEST MIELE VALUE

Miele Guard L1 Electro — Nordic Blue

Choose this if you prefer Miele and don’t need all the extra technology.

The Nordic Blue is the more straightforward of our two Miele picks. You still get the electric powerhead you need for everything from area rugs to plush carpet, along with Miele’s canister design and filtration.

It’s the better fit if you want a Miele for mixed flooring without paying for the Titanium’s added technology and convenience features.

3-Year Warranty

MOST FEATURE-RICH MIELE

Miele Guard L1 Electro — Titanium

Choose this if you want Miele’s extra convenience features.

The Titanium adds Miele’s higher-end technology to the same whole-home versatility. Automatic suction adjustment, an LCD display and app connectivity make it the better choice if those convenience features are worth the step up for you.

The Titanium is a dealer exclusive, so it isn’t available online. Call 1-833-382-2886 to order or click the chat button below.

One Vacuum for All the Floors in Your Home

Hard floors in the kitchen, an area rug in the living room, carpet in the bedrooms — that’s exactly the kind of home these vacuums are meant for.

Each model gives you a proper way to clean bare floors and an electric powerhead when you need deeper cleaning on rugs and carpet. That extra capability is what makes these models such safe choices when your flooring is mixed or you’re not quite sure what type of rugs you have.

It also gives you flexibility if your flooring changes later. You’re not buying a vacuum that only works well on one type of surface.

Why the Electric Powerhead Matters

An electric powerhead uses a motor-driven brushroll to agitate carpet and rugs so it can remove hair, dirt and debris sitting deeper in the fibers.

On hard floors, you use the vacuum’s hard-floor tool or appropriate floorhead instead. Having a powerhead doesn’t make these “carpet vacuums” — it simply gives them another capability when you need it.

Why These Five?

We carry more vacuums than the five on this page. These are the ones we come back to most often when someone wants one primary vacuum that can handle different flooring throughout the house.

Cleaning performance matters, but we also look at how a vacuum handles, how easy it is to maintain, warranty coverage, replacement parts and what ownership looks like several years down the road.

Because we sell and service these machines, we get to see more than the spec sheet. We see the questions people have before they buy and the things that matter once they’ve actually lived with the vacuum.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vacuum is best for a home with different types of flooring?

All five vacuums on this page are excellent choices for homes with a mix of hard floors, area rugs and carpet, so the best choice comes down more to the way you like to clean.

The Sebo D4 is Sebo’s top-of-the-line canister, with Sebo’s largest bag, a 40-ft cord and up to a 52-ft cleaning range, making it especially appealing for larger or busier homes, families and households with pets. The Sebo E3 is a versatile mid-size canister that balances whole-home cleaning with easy maneuverability. If you prefer an upright, the Sebo Felix is our first choice.

If you prefer Miele, both Guard L1 Electro models give you an electric powerhead for carpet along with hard-floor cleaning; the difference is mainly how many convenience features you want.

What if I don’t know whether my area rugs are low pile or medium pile?

That’s one reason we like the vacuums on this page. An electric powerhead gives you more flexibility across different rug and carpet types instead of limiting you to a vacuum designed mainly for bare floors or very low-pile rugs.

You don’t need to know the technical name for every rug in your house before choosing one of these models.

Do I need an electric powerhead if most of my house is hard floors?

Not necessarily — but it can make sense if you also have area rugs or carpet.

The vacuums on this page aren’t just for carpet. They have a proper way to clean bare floors as well, while the electric powerhead gives you the additional ability to deep-clean rugs and carpet when you need it.

If your home is truly all bare flooring with no rugs, a straight-suction model may be all you need.

What’s the difference between the Sebo E3 and Sebo D4?

Both the Sebo E3 and D4 use Sebo’s ET-1 electric powerhead with push-button brushroll removal and are excellent choices for homes with mixed flooring.

The E3 is a mid-size canister that gives you a great balance of whole-home versatility, cleaning range and maneuverability.

The D4 is Sebo’s top-of-the-line canister and puts more emphasis on capacity and reach. It has Sebo’s largest bag, a 40-ft cord, up to a 52-ft cleaning range and a 320° rotating hose connection. The larger bag means fewer bag changes, which can be especially convenient in larger homes, busy households or homes with multiple pets.

Choose between them based on the size and capacity you prefer rather than cleaning ability — both are excellent mixed-floor vacuums.

Which vacuum should I choose if I prefer an upright?

The Sebo Felix is our favorite upright in this group. It gives you an electric powerhead with brush on/off at the handle, adjustable suction and a separate hard-floor tool, so you still get the mixed-floor versatility of the canisters in an upright design.

Should I choose Sebo or Miele?

Both make excellent premium vacuums, and the models on this page can all handle mixed flooring.

We tend to recommend Sebo when long warranty coverage, serviceability and easy maintenance are priorities. Miele is a strong choice for someone who prefers Miele’s canister design, filtration options or convenience features.

We usually recommend choosing based on the machine that fits your home and preferences rather than choosing the brand first.

Which vacuum on this page is best for pet hair?

Start with your flooring rather than the word “pet.” If hair is getting into rugs or carpet, an electric powerhead is the important part — and every vacuum on this page has one.

Among the Sebo canisters, both the D4 and E3 are excellent choices. The D4 can be especially convenient in homes with multiple pets or a lot of pet hair because its larger bag means fewer bag changes, while its extra-long cleaning range lets you cover more space with fewer outlet changes.

If you prefer an upright, the Sebo Felix is our pick.

Is HEPA filtration necessary?

Not necessarily. The filter itself is only one part of a vacuum’s filtration system. A good vacuum also needs to keep dusty air from leaking around the bag, filters and body of the machine.

That’s why we look at the entire filtration system rather than choosing a vacuum simply because the word “HEPA” appears in the description.

What warranties come with these vacuums?

The Sebo D4, Sebo E3 and Sebo Felix come with a 10-year warranty when purchased from an authorized dealer.

The Miele Guard L1 Electro Nordic Blue has a 3-year warranty, while the Guard L1 Electro Titanium has a 5-year warranty.
